The Hook Guides
One variation of the snail guide is the hook guide which, as the name implies, is configured in the form of a hook. In comparison with conventional snail guides, the hook guide is more compact, stronger, and offers a 360o circumferential restriction to the wire movement. Therefore, when diamond polished, it can be used to locate a very thin wire in a precisely defined boundary as small as 1.0 mm in diameter, yet free to move along the axis of processing without wandering, such as: in wire wiping.
A case in point is depicted at bottom left where a pair of hook guide is disposed at the entrance and exit of a fine wire air wipe to keep the wire, which is subjected to high speed air impingement, at the longitudinal center of the ceramic wipe body. The wipe assembly in the illustration has been rendered transparent to unveil the location of the hook guides. Hook guides are epoxy bonded on a metal holder, with or without thread.
